Around here 4WD is not decoration. Forest roads, winter on the Bradshaw and Mingus grades, and towing all put load through transfer cases and differentials that a flat-city vehicle never sees.
We diagnose shifting complaints before recommending anything, service transmissions on schedule, and repair 4WD systems that will not engage or make noise under load.
What we handle
Fluid flushes and filter changes
Scheduled transmission service using the correct fluid specification for the vehicle.
Shifting complaints
Harsh shifts, slipping, delayed engagement and shift-related warning lights get diagnosed, not guessed at.
4WD and transfer case
Systems that will not engage, will not disengage, or make noise in 4-high or 4-low.
Differential work
Differential service and repair, including noise and leak complaints on trucks.
What is included
- Fluid and filter service to the manufacturer's specification
- Diagnosis of shift quality complaints before parts are recommended
- 4WD engagement testing
- Leak inspection on transmission, transfer case and differentials
What is not included
- Performance transmission builds
- Replacement quoted without diagnosis first
What affects the price
We do not publish flat prices, because quoting a repair before diagnosing it is how people get surprised on the invoice. These are the factors that move the number on this type of job:
- Fluid capacity and specification, some units take specific, more expensive fluid
- Whether the complaint is electronic, hydraulic or mechanical
- Truck versus car, and 2WD versus 4WD
- Access time for transfer case and differential work
How the job runs
- 1
Describe the behavior
When it slips or bangs, at what speed, hot or cold, in 2WD or 4WD.
- 2
Inspect and test drive
We verify the complaint and check fluid condition and level.
- 3
Quote the work
Service, repair, or a recommendation for a rebuild if that is the honest answer.
- 4
Complete and confirm
We road test to confirm the complaint is resolved.
Transmission replacement and rebuild options
Slipping, harsh or delayed engagement, no movement in one gear range, and shuddering under load all sound like a failed transmission, and sometimes they are. But low fluid, a failed solenoid, a wiring fault or an engine problem can produce the same symptoms, and those cost a fraction of a replacement.
So we diagnose. Fluid level and condition, scan data, pressure behavior and the exact conditions that trigger the symptom tell us whether the unit is genuinely finished. If it is, we will tell you what replacement costs and give you our honest opinion about whether the vehicle is worth it.
Confirming the failure
Fluid condition, codes, live data and road testing before anyone says the word replacement.
Automatic and manual units
Replacement of automatic transmissions and manual transmission and clutch assemblies on cars and trucks.
Diesel and towing applications
Transmissions in trucks that tow live a much harder life, especially on the grades around Prescott, and heat is usually what kills them.
Cooling and related repairs
A replacement without addressing the cooling system or the failure that caused it is a replacement you may do twice.
What is included
- Diagnosis to confirm the transmission is the actual failure
- A repair-versus-replace conversation with real numbers on both
- Fluid, filter, cooler and line service as part of the replacement
- Road test to verify shift quality before the vehicle is returned
What affects the price
- Whether a remanufactured, used or new unit is chosen
- Vehicle and transmission type, since heavy-duty truck units cost substantially more
- Whether the torque converter, cooler and lines also require replacement
- Parts availability and lead time for the specific unit
- Is my transmission definitely bad if it is slipping?
- Not necessarily. Low or burnt fluid, a solenoid fault, or even an engine misfire can feel like slipping. That is why we diagnose before quoting a replacement.
- Should I rebuild or replace?
- It depends on the unit, the vehicle's overall condition and parts availability. We will give you the honest comparison rather than steering you to the bigger invoice.
- How long does a replacement take?
- It depends heavily on the vehicle and on parts lead time. We give you a realistic timeline when we quote and tell you if it changes.
- Do you work on diesel truck transmissions?
- Yes. Diesel pickups and work trucks are a significant part of what we do.
